Wellington Racing Notes
Special to The Sun. s By the time these notes appear in print Desert Gold will be well on her way to Australia. The mare is under the care of Brusher Gray, who has been connected with F. Davis's stable for a considerable time. The trainer named went himself and took enough feed for the trip. The mare will be spelled a few days at Bandwick before going on to Melbourne, where she will make her first appearance at Caulfield on February 17. + * + B. J. Mason and H. Cutis returned South on Thursday night. Neither will be represented at Taranaki or Egmont meetings. It looks as if Mr Lowry will have a good time in the classic events at the meetings named with Estland and Finmark. + + + B. J. Mason informed me he would probably be back for the Wanganui meeting. Biplane may make his reappearance in the Jackson Stakes. + ♦ 4 Bose Pink brought off a surprise in the Foxton Cup, which she won from end to end. Her next appearance will be in the Midsummer Handicap at Biccarton. * * * After racing at Trentham B. D. O'Donnell took Wishful and Koesian through to New Plymouth. Wishful has been engaged in the Taranaki, Egmont and Dunedin Cups. + + * v Wishful's win on the second day at Trentham came as a surprise. It Was explained that he met with some interference on the first dav. * * ♦ Trials failed badly in the Foxton \ Cup. The-time j>ut up was slow, so perhaps the sandy nature of the going did not suit him. * + ♦ The next meeting for local horses and punters is Pahiatua on the 31st inst. Vascovia, winner of the Trentham Apprentices Handicap, is engaged in two events, and should run well in whichever she starts. * ♦ + Snub is engaged in the principal event, but may be spelled after the number of times he has finished out of a place. Master Moutoa, who was placed at Manawatu, and acted as runner-up at Foxton, looks the most j likely to score. Both events in which he is engaged are very weak. | Arihia is also in two events. She; may encounter Vascovia in the mile and distance event, unless the latter is reserved for the Konini Handicap, seven furlongs. * * * T. Pritchard is going to the Pahiatua meeting with Merrie Poto, who I
WELLINGTON, January 25. lis in the Telephone Handicap, six furlongs. Trentham Bose, who ricked her shoulder at Hokitika, and iNamur, runner-up to Waimatao at I Foxton, are in the field. ♦ * * The sensation of the Wellington meeting was the defeat of Nanna in the Telegraph Handicap. She was very heavily backed with Nobleman, the Cup winner. Her owner asked for an inquirv, and showed that he had £2OO on her. Bidden by J. Olsen she showed up prominently for half a mile, but then dropped out and finished well back. On the second day she was ridden by H. Young and, meeting AVrestler on 131b better I terms, never looked like getting J beaten. An exhaustive inquiry has been held and kept open in the hope I that some of the rumours floating [round could be proved. Your correspondent is of opinion that a rather unpleasant incident will be closed with the verdict of not proven. ♦ x* * J. W. Lowe parted with two of his team after the meeting. Matilda has gone into J. Ayres's stable, and Ayah will in future be trained by J. McLaughlin. 1 * + + Waimatao, runner-up to Wrestler at Trentham, had no difficulty in picking up a stake at Foxton. He is useful in his class, and now that he has struck form should win again. ♦ ♦ * When Association Street Singer came home at tb »f the* field in the Camp H. . ap at Trentham, neither horse was fancied by their connections. Street Singer is in the Hack Flying at Pahiatua with the lowest weight ♦ + * Galore, a place-getter in the Camp Handicap at Trentham, is engaged in the Maiden Hack and Makuri Hack, two five furlong evenls at Pahiatua. She should win which ever race she starts in. ♦ + * The Fordell stable had four horses at the Foxton meeting and won with First Line and Coolpan, who were beaten at Manawatu and Marton. ♦ + ♦ Mr J. Harle, of Wellington, owner of Bobur, has purchased Simonides. The Demosthenes colt will in future be trained by B. Barlow at New Plymouth. ♦ ♦ ♦ Glorify, winner of the Herrington Welter at Foxton, is in the big event at Pahiatua. So far he has not won over a longer* course thau seven furlongs.
