BUTCHER'S BANKRUPTCY.

MEETING OF CREDITORS. A meeting of creditors in the bankrupt estate of .lames Hendren, butcher, New Brighton, was held this afternoon, Mr T. D. Kendall, Official Assignee, presiding. Mr Hoban represented the bankrupt. Bankiupt's statement showed a deficiency of £:175. Tho liabilit ; cs amounted to £574 •">/-, due to unsecured creditors, and the assets to £IOO, made up as follows:—Property £ll6 10/-, furniture £BO, cash in hand'£2 10/-. The unsecured creditors were:—New Zealand Fanners' Coop. Association £IOO, National Mortgage and Agency Co.' £BO, l'vne and Co. £lO, Berrvman Bros. £.H, Gibson Bros. £4, F. McPhail £6O, W. Hendren £6O, Anderson and Gunn £lO 5/-, F. D. Kestcveu £35/-. Another creditor, Matson ami Co. £2OO, was stated to be partially secured. Bankrupt, in his sworn statement, said he started business in dune 1915, on £IOO capital, which he borrowed from his wife. The average takings up to the end of .101(5 were £SO or £OO a week. lie had an illness, and was compelled to employ labour. The takings had steadily decreased since February last. • He -was a married man with three children, was a moderate drinker, and did not gamble to excess. He attributed his failure to the setback on account of his illness, the decreased turnover, and the high cost of meat. In reply to a question bankrupt said that, his wife had opened another shop in Brighton. Mr Kendall said that from the look of| the bankrupt's affairs there would j&al very little for the general body of C^ditors. JEMr Cole, representing 11. Matson and >s».-, moved that the Official Assignee appoint an accountant to investigate ' the books, and have turned up all the bank slips for which payment had been made to the bank, and to trace payments of all cheques drawn by bankrupt with a view to seeing that all fcmounts were relative to the business, p >T3ie. Official Assignee said that he Wf6uld instruct; the accountant to make full inquiries, and would let the creditors know the information gained. ■•Mr Cole withdrew his motion, ami tho Being agreed to accept Air Kendall's f of assistance.
