WORK FOR SOLDIERS.
POST-WAR PROVISION. Press Association. WHAKATANE, December 12. The new freezing works at Whakatane were opened yesterday by the Prime Minister in the presence of a large gathering, including the lions. W. Fraser, W. 11. Herries, W. D. S. Mac Donald, A. T. Ngata, ami Sir James Carroll. Speaking at a dinner in the evening, Mr Massey said the Government was taking all possible measures to prepare for peace, and most of the plans were matured. If peace were declared to-morrow New Zealand troops could begin demobilising at once. Public works would immediately absorb twelve thousand men. The Government must pursue a vigorous works policy and intended to push on development work on a large scale. Mr Massey predicted a big future for Whakatane. Mr Herries, referring to the Urewera, said the Government had now purchased 230,(100 acres of Native lands there, and more was still being acquired. It had now purchased interests in all the main accessible blocks.
