The Education Department advised j that the plana for the new class-room were approved, subject to minor alteraitions, ami that a subsidy would be I granted towards fittings and appliances i for the laboratory. Messrs Tucker, Litl, and Drummond (promised to give prizes to be awarded in connection with the agricultural science class, and were accorded a vote of thanks. The headmaster (Mr W. F. Walters) [■reported that the roll number of pupils aggregated 143, ami included 94 boys and 10 girls. The average attendance i had been 137, or 96% of the roll number. J Messrs OcswelJ and Rtidman, secondary school inspectors, had visited the school during the month. lie recommended I that the annual broaking-up ceremony [.should take place on December 13. Votes of condolence were passed to 'the relatives of Sapper Sage and RitlcImau Church, who had died of wounds. ; It was decided to hold a Field Day at [the Experimental Farm on November 2!), and the report was adopted. I Accounts amounting to £222 11/4 were passed for payment. RELIEF FUND COMMITTEE. , The Astiburton County War ltelicf ( Fund Committee met in the A. and P. Rooms on Tuesday afternoon, wheni there were present: The Mavor (Mr li.. Galbraith), and Messrs T. Bullock, D. Wood, T. Hayes, and C.W. Nicoll (lion, j secretary). The balance-sheet showed the total of] the fund to lie £31,651 5/2. Tnc grants to sick, wounded, and returned' men, ami assistance to dependents ofi soldiers, totalled £IBBO 11/8, and the) expenses of administration £SI 10/2.; The funds on hand at September 30; were £29,689 3/4, which are invested as; follows:—Mortgages £20.95(1, debentures £SOOO, War Loan £3575, and bank! balance £1(54 3/4. The committee had already dealt; with upwards of 200 cases, and there. were at present 09 cases on the books receiving regular payments, which amounted lo £ISOO per annum.

Four and six-tooth wethers brought ;!fi/-, wether hoggets 29/s, and ewes in lamb 27/6. There was a good demand for the offerings in beef. Fat heifers reached from £lO 15/- up to £ls 17/6, a cow £l3 7/6, and stores were at ruling rates, although a fair number were passed. A pleasant afternoon was spent on : Friday last at the resilience of Mrs E. Buchanan, when the ladies of St. Andrew's met to honour and farewell Mrs U. i\ Begg, who is leaving for the, North Island. The Rev. Mrs G. Miller expressed regret at Mrs Begg's going away, and presented her, on behalf of those present, with a handsome cameo brooch and handbag. Mrs Begg feelingly responded.
