SWIMMING.

F.AST CHIUSTCHURCH CLUB. The first swimming race of the .season was conducted at the Tepid Baths last evening, when the East Christchurch Club decided its opening handicap over a course of 33 I-3rd yards. There was a good field for an opening season race, sixteen competitors facing the starter. The swimming was uniformly good, and the handicapper (Mr F. Collins) succeeded in bringing the swimmers very close together ut the finish. The result was as under:— First heat.—S. Hunt (2sec) 1, S. Hollander (Isec) 2. Also started: 1). Lightband (scv), C. StatTord (Sseci, .1. Hall (7sec). Second heat.—J. Hirst (2sec) 1, B. O'Neill (Usee) 2. Also started: R. Coulter (scrt, U Donaldson (ssec), W. Drayton (C.sec). Third heat.—N. Batchelor (21sec) 1, M. McNeelv (Usee) 2. Also started: L. Hill (scr), P. Kirby (.Isec), 1). Coulter (Gsec), It. Dumbier (Bsec). Final.—J. Hirst 1, N. Batchelor 2, 11. O'Neill 3.
