NOTES. Captain Marcicl, Superintendent of Mercantile Marine at Lyttelton, has received the following telegram from Mr G. Allport, Secretary for Marine:—Advise shipmasters sailing in Cook Strait that there are two cable buoys off Terawhiti one ofT Karorl Rock south 88 degrees east Terawhiti north; other Karori Rock south 53 degrees east, Terawhiti north 15 degrees east, bearings magnetic. The new Victorian Customs launch which ts being constructed by the Department of the Navy is now approaching completion, and it will probably be launched in the course of a few weeks. All the other Customs launches are driven by steam, but In this case Polar-Diesel engines, supplied by Messrs Gardner and Waern, will furnish the motive-power. The work of a Customs launch is necessarily of an intermittent character, and with steam the greater part of the fuel is consumed when the furnace fires are "bartked up." The Diesel engines use oil fuel, however, only when they arc at ■work. They can be started in less than a minute, they save an attendant, and the department estimates the saving of fuel that ■will be effected by their adoption at no less than 90 per cent.
