CHRIST'S COLLEGE WINS.
SCHOOL BEATEN BY 15 POINTS. AN INTERESTING MATCH. A large crowd which attended Ihe annual Rugby match between the first fifteens of Boys' High School and Christ's College, at the College ground yesterday afternoon were in no way disappointed with the exhibition of football. Though the margin for Christ's College was fairly substantial the victory was by no means easily won. for up to halftime School was playing so well up to its opponents' form that no score was made by cither side. The game was exciting in the first half-hour, Ihe play veering from one end of the field to the oilier, with a slight advantage to School. With a much heavier team. Christ's College had the better of the game almost all through, but the High School lads kept their opponents down to a scoreless first half. In the second half, School tired, and College scored and converted three tries. The School team was handicapped by a lack of seasoned plavers, there being onlv four of last year's first fifteen in the team. The remainder were drawn from last year's second team and four or five were recruited from the third grade. A fine exhibition of cool defensive plav was given bv W. Dal lev, the Hich School halfback, in the first half especially. Hv was the smallest player on Ihe field, but his pameness and coolness won him the admiration of crow;] and he was carried off shoulder-high at the conclusion of the game. The teams were:.— CUBIST'S COLLF.fiK. Full-back—L. E. Cooke (11st Ullil. '" Thrrr-qunrters—K. 11. Hnnfreavcs (11st 11ll)i, F. F. fi.-liatley (flst 131b'), R. B. Wilson (11st 2lbl. Five-ctehths—F. W. Karlv in the game Ihe College forwards led by Straeban and Tolhill,; carried the play from their ownj twenty-five to School's twenty-five. lioodwin, the School full-back, relieved the pressure bv a nicely-taken mark. The lighter School backs rushed the plav back to the College quarter. School secured from a scrum and Bowes dashed for the line but was brought down. School was pressing College when the backs willed Ihe ball in passing and Tolhill, rushing through, sent the ball down the field with a Hying kick and followed up fast. Goodwin kicked the ball over his own line and forced down. From the scrum five yards out the ball was hooked by but the hacks were too well narked to score. College pressed hard on the School line for a time, ■intil the School forwards broke nwav. Plav hovered in midfield for a time, both teams playing hard. The full-backs of both teams were verv safe and kept the ball up in midficld a good deal A free kick was given against High School on its own nunfter-way line and Harcreaves had a shot at goal which was not successful. There was a series of scrums a few vards o><t from the School line but though the College forwards freouenfly secured the ball ibeir backs could not do anything with it. Inrcelv due to the quickness and sound tackling of the School '•acks. Towards the latter end of 'he first half play had evened up -onsiderablv and the spell ended 'itliout a score being registered by either side. Second Half. The School players had the sun, | and what slight wind there was at 'heir backs in the second half. A long kick by Cooke sent the ball well town into School territory. Play •ontinued in the School twenty-five r or some time, and from a scrum the ".ollcge backs looked like scoring, hut Hindmarsh spoilt the chance by holding on too long. Graham relieved the pressure on the School line by cleverly intercepting a pass, and carrying the play past half-way. College soon forged through to the ■school twenty-five, and looked dangerous for a lime. Dalley was again very useful on Ihe line in -tearing for School, but College con'inued to attack, and after several attempts at passing among the College backs, Cowlishaw, at liveeighths, picked up and made a run for it without a man supporting him. He got through the light opposition and scored between the posts. Hargreaves converted. Christ's College 5, Boys' High School nil. School went on to the attack and sained ground for a time. But the College hacks were improving in j their passing, and twice they made School force down. The backs set a passing rush going in front of the School goal, and Cowlishaw made a
good run, and then transferred to Sugden, who scored in a good position. Hargrcaves was again successful with the kick. Christ's College 10, Boys' High! School nil. Sugden had been on {he field only i a N few minutes having relieved \\i\- ■ son, who had to go off. School J could not gel far over Ihe half-way j line, and College often had the side, in difficulties. The School fullback ran up towards a high kick, but j did not get there in lime, and before I be could pick ihe ball up the College forwards were upon ii. Bunion the heaviest of the College forwards! secured, and when near the line he transferred to Stock, who scored. ! although Burdon could have scored j easily himself. Hargreaves kicked a nice goal. College 15, Boys' High School nil. School rushed College into the I lalter's twenty-five, but could not maintain the advantage, College returning the play to the School quarter, where if was slid in progress when the whistle sounded.
