ASSAULT ON A SOLDIER.
SUBSTANTIAL PENALTIES. At the Police Court at Ambcrlcy this morning two men named jThomas Dobson and George Gorrie [appeared on a charge of assaulting | Sergeant-Major Morrison at Amber- ! ley recently. Sergeant-Major Morrison gave evidence lii.il lie wa.s molor-cycling through Amberley when his lamp I went out. and lie asked a group of 'men for a light. lie was knocked I down and kicked twice while on the [ground. When gelling up, Gorrie hit him behind the ear and knocked j him down again. Alfred <i. Kussell, a farmer of Sel'ton. also gave evidence. ! Constable .las. Kennedy, of Amberley, said that he had investigated the [complaint and spoke to Dobson who jsaid he admitted striking one blow. The defendant George Gorrie said jhe was a shepherd at The Peaks. On I the day in question lie had been into ScTlon for medical examination. He 'had a few drinks. He saw plaintiff j coming, and one of his mates called out: Where's your light. After fixing his light thev asked Morrison to Ishout, lie saw Dobson hit a! Morrison, but did not see him fall. He (lid not strike a blow. In cross-examination by Captain Pilkington witness said he had had a few drinks. He did not see Morrison hit or Knocked down. Thomas Dobson, labourer, Seflon, said there were six others outside the hotel. He said to the complainant, "You might kill somebody riding without a light.'-'. He had struck Morrison but bad not knocked him down. Gorrie did not hit him. The Magistrate remarked that the assault was a most aggravated one end there were no mitigating circircumstances. Dobson was convicted and fined IT) and costs and Gorrie >v:is sentenced to seven days' hard i labour.
