A petition in bankrupt?., Las been filed by Win. Frederick Burns, draper, Ghristehurih. The date of the meeting oi creditors lias not yet been fixed. In the House of Representatives last evening, Mr Massey announced that he hoped that more satisfactory arrangements would be made this year regarding cheese than had been made last season. He had arranged a conference of representatives of producers of cheese to discuss the question of prices. Replying to a question asked in the House of Representatives yesterday by Mr George Forties (Hurunui), Sir James Allen (Minister of Defence) promised to inquire from the Postal Department whether it is correct that mileage is charged in telegrams to the next-of-kin of soldiers who have, been killed or wounded, informing them of the casualty. Mr Hugh Poland (Ohineniuri) complained in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon that the Defence Department did not give parents of returning soldiers the correct date of the arrival of the transports, with the result that they often wasted more than a week at the port of arrival, waiting for the boat to turn up. Sir James Alien said that the public got all the information the department had. The Prime Minister statetl in the House of Representatives last night that Mrs Gillies, of Rotorua, had placed at the disposal of the Government, for the use of returned soldiers, her property at Rotorua, consisting of a house of 15 rooms and seven acres of land, mostly garden. Mr Massey said that *the Government accepted the offer, which was very much appreciated. (Applause.) Dr. H. T. J. Thacker (Christchurch East.) "trotted out" his latest scandal in the House, of Representatives yesterday afternoon. He alleged that artillerymen suffering from cuts and abrasions on their hands had to handle manure with their hands, thus incurring the risk of contracting tetanus.
Sir Jomes Allen said ihat he did not know of any case in which soldiers had to handle manure actually with their hands. Dr. Thaeker: Weil, you know now. In consequence of a resolution adopted by a conference of Red Cross workers from all parts <.' the Dominion, mm.meeting in Wellington, deprecating the supplying of convalescent soldiers willi drink, Mr T. M. Wilford (liutt) asked the Minister of Defence, in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon, whether a distinctive uui- * form would, be issued to soldiers undergoing hospital treatment, as is done at Home. Sir James Allen replied that the matter was being, considered, but he authorities did not wisji to impose special conditions on any class of soldiers unless they were absolutely necessary.
