COUNTY COUNCILS.

MOUNT HERBERT. A meeting of the Mount Herbert County Council was held in the Council Chambers at Purau on Monday, when 'hore v.-pvo present: —Messrs Orton Brndi(>v (chairman), A. E. Fleming, G.Steele, L. M. Wilson. W. 11. Firmston, J. Hunter and R. Allan. T f was decided, on the motion of Mr Allan, that a general rate of Jd in the Port Levy riding, and hi in the Port Victoria riding be struck for the en ■uinrr vear.

The council agreed to lease the house recently bought for ;i workman's dwelling for five years on the terms of 51 per cent, on the purchase money.

The financial statement showed a .•rodii balance of £467 10/10. The sum ;l' £IOO was transferred from the Port Lew Riding to Port Victoria. The clerk was instructed to tnke legal fiction to recover outstanding rates. It was decided to write to the Lyttelion Borough Council calling attention to (he bad state of the road along Ihe boundary of the Diamond Harbour estate.

The following resolution moved by Hie chairman, w;is pased:—"That owing to the large iinnual sums required bv hospital and charitable aid boards for the purpose of replacing old buildings and for extending institutions to meet the demand of an increasing population, this council desires to represent to the Minister of Internal Affairs (he need for an amendment to the Hospital and Charitable institutions Act, enabling hoards to borrow money for capital expenditure, due safeguards being provided against over borrowing." Tt was decided to forward a copy of the resolution to local bodies throughout the Dominion, requesting that should they endorse ii, representations should he made to the various members of Parliament, asking them to urge upon the Minister the need for siit-'h amendment of the Act. The chairman reported that lie had. visited all the gum plantations along (he .roadsides, and found them doing well, and additional planting being carried out.
