RED CROSS.

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. The executive of the Red Cross mot yesterday afternoon for the purpose of discussing an appeal received lately from England for ;iii "Oer Day" effort, in connection with the Itcd Cross and the Order of St. John. Mr A. E. G. Rhodes presided, and there were also prcscut: Messrs ,1. A. Flesher, M. Gresson, YY. T. Robinson, P. 1.. Hallenstoin, 11. J. Beswick, E. Nordon, lion. .1. Borthwick, Dr M. Louisson, the Rev. Mr Hewland, Mesdames Wigram and Cyrus Williams. Some discussion tool; place regarding the date on which the appeal should be held, and it was decided to hold it on the last Friday in September. Mr .1. A. i-'lcsher brought up the matter or the request of the Minister of Internal Affairs thai all money should So to nini. Mr Gresson considered thai the executive should make a strong protest, or else ask the .Minister lor his reasons for his request. It was the general opinion of members that if the people knew that the money was to go to the Minister they would not he inclined to subscribe. It was mentioned that the request may have emanated from the Government. it was decided to write to Colonel Moorhouse, chief executive olliccr of the Society in New Zealand, asking him lo write to Hie Minister in connection with tiie request. It was decided to communicate with all the brunches stating that preparations were in hand for the holding of an '"Our Day" appeal, and expressing the hope that all would co-operate. A committee was set up to manage the effort. It was also decided to arrange for a Violet Day effort. GENERAL FUND. Comforts for soldiers in military hosnitals have been received from the following:— New lirighton branch, Mr W. C. Ric!:ards, Mrs Miles, Mrs Coe, Miss Hawker. SALE AT OPAVvA. The jumble sale held at Opawa last Saturday was a great success, in spite of the bad weather. There were several stalls —a work stall in charge of Mrs Wilding, assisted by the members of her working bee; a produce stall in charge of Mesdamcs Monro. Chapman, and Trerisc, and well stocked wilh good tilings: a sweet stall managed by Mesdamcs Tacon, Brvdges, Jones, and Shaw, assisted by Misses Weavers and Wood, and stocked' with tempting sweets. The trade at the sweet stall was very brisk, and at one time the sellers were unable to cope with the rush of customers, and outside assistance had to be called in. A tea stall was run by Mrs Ferrier, assisted by the Bandage Making Class, and the shooting gallery was presided over by Mr Tisdall. The proceeds of the sail- amounted to £7O. The thanks of Hie commit lee are due to Messrs Polhill, Longton, and Shaw for valuable assistance rendered in various ways, and to Mr Beanland and his carpentering class for erecting the stalls.

KAIAPOI BRANCH. The second annual meeting of the Kaia-poi-Clarkville Red Cross was held in ;h" Coffee Rooms yesterday afternoon, Mrs J. H. Blackwe.il being in the chair. The report stated that every month a case of garments and bandages had been forwarded to the depot in Christchurch. Donations had been made to the following runds:—British Red Cross, Our Day, Belgian, Y.M.C.A., Trench Comforts, Cardigan Jacket, and the Comforts Department. They had unfortunately lost four valued members of their committee. Mesdamcs T. Ilassall, W. W. Poole, 11. McDougall, and Miss Pavitt, through removal to other districts. The thanks of the committee are specially due to the W.C.T.U. for the continued free use of their rooms, for working and sorting goods; to Chirkville workers for splendid donations from sale of work and socials, etc., amounting to £153 1/2; to Mrs Reay's concert party, who had contributed £IOO 7/9; to the Northern A. and P. Association, Kaiapoi Working Men's Club, Kaiapoi Fire Brigade, and various other clubs and societies, for their efforts. During the year the following list of garments and bandages had been forwarded to the Central Depot:—lßsß roller bandages, 139 manitail, 50(1 triangular, ISS binders, 111 face cloths, 123 diet cloths, 119 fomentation cloths, 107 plugs, 2227 swabs. 95 wringers, KKS bundles of old linen, IS old sheets, 8 jug covers, 20 dressing gowns, 12 bed jackets, 50 pillowcases, 80 handkerchiefs, 105 eye bandages, 0 pairs bed socks, 30 mufflers, 21 balaclavas, 13 underpants. 17-1 suits of pyjamas, 203 shirts, 112 undershirts, 15 pairs mittens, 072 pairs socks. The balance-sheet gave receipts for the year as £OBB 12 3, an increase of £lOl 10 - on last year; £342 6/1 has been spent on materials for work. Donations to funds amount 1o £l9O 2/-; rent, gas, printing, and sundry expenses total £ls 18/11; leaving a credit balance of £134 1/3 to be carried forward. The following officers were elected:—Mrs J. 11. Blackwell, president; Mrs J. W. Barnard, vice-president; and Mrs T. R. Leithead, treasurer and secretary. A vole of thanks was passed to the retiring ollieers for their services during the past year.
