Forbes, of Ist Canterbury Battalion, was , admitted to the Walton-on-Thames Hospital on June 1, suffering from a gunshot wound ill the back. Driver Forbes left New Zealand with the Main Body, and he is one of three sous on active service. Sergeant N. R. Forbes also left with the Main Body, and Private V. T. Forbes with the 2(ith I Reinforcement. Sergeant William F. McLaren, wounded, ! was educated at the Kensington School, j Dunedin. Before leaving with the 4th ReI inforcement he was employed by the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency, Dune- ! din. He was the eldest son of the late [Mr James McLaren, a former Mayor and I councillor of Caversham. He saw service in Egypt and Gallipoli, and later in France. Private advice has been received that Rifleman A. G. Davidson, of the First Battalion of the Rifle Brigade has been admiti ted to hospital suffering from wounds and having also been slightly gassed. Before enlisting Rifleman Dayidson was employed in the stereotyping department of The Sun. A later message received from Rifleman Davidson states that he is progressing satisfactorily. Private Ralph A. Simpson, wounded, is the only son of Mr and Mrs A. Simpson, of 94 Aldwin's Road, late of 12 Southey Street, Sydenham. He was in his 21st year. He received his education at Bichmind and St. Albans schools and prior to his enlistment with the 19th Reinforcement was in the employ of the Cliristchurch " Press " Company. Mrs Jennings, of 482 Hereford Street East, has received advice that her youngest son, Sergeant Noel W. Jennings, was killed In the fighting round Messines. Sergeant Jen-

I nings, who was 25 years of age, was educated at Nelson College, where he held a I commission in the Cadet Corps. He was well-known in journalistic circles, in Christchurch and Auckland. He joined the Rifle j Brigade towards the end of 1915 and left New Zealand with the 12th Reinforcement. ' Sergeant Jennings had seen a good deal of ] service in France during the past few I months. His eldest brother is Mr Clif- | ford Jennings, dentist, of Invercargill, and I the other brother is Mr J. S. Jennings, of : the Eastern Extension Cable Company's j staff at Hong Kong. | Advice was received yesterday by Mr E. Baker, of Waiau, that his son, Corporal Alexander Stanley Baker, had been killed . in France. Corporal Raker, who was 2!) | years of age, was educated at the Sydenham School, subsequently following farm--f ing pursuits at Waikuku, and, with his parents, at Waiau from the opening of the settlement. Up to January last lie was engaged in England as physical and bayonet instructor, and in his last letter home stated that he was in charge of the bayonet section of bis company (North Canterbury). His brother, Sergeant Leonard Francis Baker, died of wounds received at Gnlilipoli on August 21, 1915. The late Cori poral Baker was secretary of the Railway j League in connection with the construction of the Culverden-Waiau railway cxI tension. Private B. V. Williams, who was report--1 ed to have been killed in action on June .8, was a son of the Rev. W. J. Williams, I of Sumner. He was born in Cliristchurch j and educated in Timaru, Auckland, and ' Nelson, being for a time a student at Nelson College. After leaving college be spent some years at sea. At the outbreak of the war he enlisted and went with the New Zealand Force to Samoa. lie returned after a year and joined the sth Reinforcement, with which he went to Egypt and Gallipoli. On Gallipoli he was severely wounded in the right foot and was sent to Kng--1 laud. On his recovery he returned to j Egypt, proceeding- thence to France. Private Williams was 29 years of age. Advice has been received by Mr John I Smith, of Addington, that his son. Sapper John Arnold Smith, was wounded on June 8. Sapper Smith, who is 2:i years of a<?e, was born in Ballarat, and came to Chi'istchurch with his parents at an early age. He was educated at the Sydiienham and West Cliristchurch schools, and the Technical College and Canterbury College. He was an electrical engineer, and before enlisting was in the employ of the National Electric Company. He took an interest in sport and was a member of the Rechabite and Y.M.C.A. Cricket Clubs. Sapper Smith Left' New Zealand as Acting-Quartermaster-Ser-geant with the ltlh Reinforcement, but on reaching Home gave up his stripes, preferring to return to the ranks. Another son of Mr John Smith was wounded while fighting with the Australians on August 6 last. Private Ronald Duncan Bain, who was killed in France on June 7, was the youngest son of the late Mr J, Bain. He was barn in Cliristchurch in 1872, and was educated at the Normal School, Cliristchurch. He was farming in Taranaki at the outbreak of war, but he sold his farm and enlisted, leaving with the 19th Reinforcement. His mother and sister reside at Sumner, and his brother, Corporal H. Bain, is in camp. He has two other brothers, who have also enlisted, Dr L. Bain, who was in America, and Staff Sergeanl-Major Bain, Dental Hospital, Sydney. Rifleman J. H. P. Pauling, who has been wounded in the left eye and, right thigh by gunshot, enlisted wilh the lath Reinforcement of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade. Prior to enlisting he was employed on the Lyttelton staff of the Union Steamship Company. Private advice has been received that Rifleman Wilfred Mullins, a member of the 12th Reinforcement, has been wounded in the left leg. Prior to enlisting he was cmployed as chauffeur by Mr Percy Herman. He was educated at Marist Bros.' school. His brother, Private J. C. Mulliiis, was wounded on the same day. The latter was a member of the "New Zealand Referee" staff before enlisting in the Canterbury Regiment, Main Body. He has had a splendid record during his active service, which extends over nearly three years, his latest injury being tlie fourth time he has been wounded. Another brother, Henry, who left with the 11th Reinforcement, is still at the front. Mrs Mullins, Upper Ricearton, is the mother of the three soldiers. Private Percy Dobbie, killed in action, was a son of Mr D. Dobbie, 83 Bishop Street. He was 27 years of age, and enlisted with the Bth Reinforcement. Prior to enlisting lie was fire risk inspector for the Farmers' Insurance Company. There are two other brothers at the front. Private J. H. Bennett, the well-known Canterbury and New Zealand representative cricketer, has been wounded. He was horn in Canterbury, and educated at the Roys' High School. He has represented his province on several occasions in cricket, and toured Australia with the New Zealand team a few years ago. Private A. E. (Bert) Ames, who has liecn killed in action, was a member of the 12th Reinforcement of the Howitzer Battery. He was previously employed as assistant stereotyper on the "Lyttelton Times." He was well known at competitions and entertainments as an elocutionist. Sergeant Wm. Henry Raymond Mein, killed in action, was born at Woodslec Down Station, near Wyndham, in 1890. He left with the Main Body, and was wounded on Gallipoli, where he recovered, and went through the evacuation. He went to France as a corporal, and was promoted to sergeant at the Somnie. Prior to enlisting he was manager of the Birchwood Dairy Factory. ! Lieutenant A. G. Poison has been wounded in the right arm. He was well known in commercial circles, both in Cliristchurch and in Timaru. He was for some years in the grain department of the Co-operative Association in Timaru, and later head of the grain department of the New Zealand Farmers' Co-op. in Christchurch. A short time prior to the war he severed his connection with the Co-op. and entered into business as a grain and commission agent in partnership with Mr A. H. Giller in Cashel Street, trading under the name of Messrs Giller and Poison, but gave up bis prospects with this firm in order to enlist. He was a valued member of the Addington Hockey Club, and a representative player while in South Canterbury. He was also a member of the New Brighton Golf Club. Lieutenant Poison joined the 9th Beinforcement, and later won a commission and left with the 12th's. Major J. H. Luxford (wounded) is a son of Mr W. L. Luxford, of Hamilton. Before his enlistment he was in practice, as a solicitor at Te Awamutu. He left New Zealand in February, 1910, being then attached with the rank of captain, to the Rifle Bri-

gadc, but on his arrival in Franco lie was transferred to the Machine-gun Corps, and afior a short period of service was promoted to the rank of major. Private Frederick Fuller Since (died of wounds) was the eldest son of Mr and Mrs j Since, of 22 Trafalgar Street, St. Albans.! He enlisted in the 17th Reinforcement. He was born at West Dulwich, England, and \ spent his 21st birthday at the front. He came out to New Zealand when 15 years of age. After a stay at Hokitika he went to I llari Hari, where he was engaged in dairy i fanning. A younger brother has been at I the front since July last. Miss E. Wheeler, 88 liarbour Slrect, Linwood, received advice that her brother,! I Rifleman H. K. Wheeler, had died of wounds! i received in France on June !>. Rifleman I ! Wheeler was 27 years of age, and left with the 18th Reinforcement. Mr W. J. P. Houston, of the New Zealand Shipping Cohmpany's Christchurch staff, re-1 ceived official advice last night that bis son, Corporal Philip Boulton, of the Ist Canterbury Company, was wounded in France 1 \ \>n the Bth Inst. Burrows, who has been admitted to the Brockenhurst Hospital suffering from gunshot wounds in tiie back, is | the eldest soiv of Mr and Mrs F. Burrows, I of Waiau. He enlisted with the 15th Reini forccments, and is 21 years of age. who was reported as missing, has been killed in act.on in France. Sergeant W. R. Marsden, who was wounded in the Somme battle in September, has been assigned duties at Codford Depot Hospital. Mr H. C. Craighead, Cameron Street. Ashburton, has received advice that his second son. Private Matthew 1.. Craighead, has been admitted to Walton-on-Thames Hospital, suffering from shell wounds in the leg. Mrs H. Sutton, Cox Street, Asbhurton, has received advice that her son, Private William Sutton, lias been wounded in the foot, and another son, Private F. Sutton, has been wounded in the knee. Roth left with the Cth Reinforcement. Mrs Sutton has five sons < !i active service, and another will be leaving New Zealand at an early date.
