BIGGEST SHORTAGE YET.
ONLY 379 VOLUNTEERS. I 8545 NAMES TO BE DRAWN. Press ASKodaiion. WELLINGTON, May 29. In the cightli ballot, which is being taken to-day, 8545 names are to be drawn. The shortage for the 32nd Reinforcement, mobilising two months hence, is 1898, which is the largest to date, under the voluntary system. Every district has a shortage, as the voluntary recruits numbered only 379 for the whole Dominion. The three Canterbury districts obtained seventeen recruits, and the West Coast none. There thus remain in the First Division only sufficient men for another three ballots, with a few thousand over. This means that the First Division will be exhausted by the ballot in twelve weeks. Then must come the re-examination of men passed for home service, also the revision of exemptions, before the Second Division is drawn on.
