SUMNER-REDCLIFFS.
A meeting of the Sumner Burgesses' Association was held on Saturday even-' ing, Mr H. Buttle presiding. A deputation from the Kedcliffs Progressive As-1 soeiation, consisting of 'Messrs Woods, Holden and Yates, attended the meet-; iiig. Mr. Yates explained that his as- J soeiation thought that three councillors would be a fair proportion of new eouu-1 eillors to represent Bedeliffs, leaving; five to be found for Sumuer. If agreed ! on that point, he believed both bodies | would work together to their mutual j advantage. On the motion of Mr E.! G. Wood, seeouded by Mr J. P. Law-j renee, it was derided that the proposal i be agreed to. The chairman stated j that, to save expense, the association j was prepared to nominate the required number, and thus obviate a poll being necessary. The following were nominated as candidates for Redcliffs:—Mes srs A. E. B. Kankhi, A. Senior, and F. Gill. There were eight nominations for Sumner, and a ballot was taken, re- j rutting in the following beiug selected I as the five candidates: —Messrs lb 0. Jamieson, W. Bailor, H. Buttle, C. T. Middleton and T. E. Whitfield. As Mr Jamieson headed the list, it was decided to ask him to stand for the byeelection.
The question of nominating a candidate for the position of Mayor was discussed, and, on the motion of Mr E. G. Wood, the Hon. J. Barr was unanimously selected as the representative of the two associations. Mr. Barr attend- j ed later, and thanked the meeting. He ; announced that he would accept nomination, and, it elected, would do all he could for the borough as a whole. It was decided to write the Tramway Board expressing appreciation of the arrangements maue wherein' concession tickets could be purchased ia the bor- i ough during the evening. It was further resolved to circularise all ratepayers, notifying them of the decisions arrived at with regard to the election of Mayor and Councillors, the matter being left in the hands of the executive'Oininittec, and Messrs Yates i and Ilohlen.
The members of the Sumner Croquet Club held a progressive Tournament on Saturday, in aid of the Red Cross Fund. There were eighteen entries, aivl £1 14/- was rai.se.t.
