BRITISH CAVALRY WITHIN TWELVE MILES. IMPOSSIBLE FOR TURKS TO DEFEND CITY. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. \ (Received March 9, 12.35 p.m.) LONDON, March 8. Lieutenant-General Maude announces that the capture of Bagdad is imminent. The British cavalry are within 12 miles of the city. It is impossible to defend the city, but the Turks may make a stand six miles to the southward. If they do not, they must retreat to the north to find defensible positions.
