CITY COUNCIL.

SYDENHAM BY-ELECTION. Nominations for the position of a Sydenham Ward representative on the Christchurch City Council, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Cr W. Millar, were receivable up to noon today. There was only one nomination, that of Mr Hiram H. Hunter, a former member of the council, who was defeated at the last election. Mr Hunter is, therefore, returned unopposed. In connection with the election a deputation of Sydenham electors waited on Mr E. S. McKeon on Monday evening and requested that he allow himself to be nominated for the seat. In reply, Mr McKeon pointed out that the candidate elected could only sit at one or two meetings of the council, and he did not consider that it would be right to put the city to the expense of an election. However, if it were the wish of the deputation, he would consent to be nominated in April for the general election of councillors.
