NAVY LEAGUE.
The committee of the Canterbury Branch of the Navy League met last evening, Captain Marciel presiding. Mrs Free wrote, resigning her position on the committee, owing to absence from Christchureh. It was decided not to accept the resignation, but to grant Mrs Free unlimited leave.
The general secretary of the league, writing from London under date January 11, acknowledged receipt of £IOOO, which brought the total amount received from Canterbury to 02.000. and that of the Dominion to £98,305 5/6. It was a wonderful testimony^to the touching sympathy to which New Zealand had given expression on behalf of the widows and orphans of the sailors who had given their lives for the Empire. The British and Foreign Sailors' Society, Christohtirch, wrote suggesting that the Navy League should co-operate with, the society in making a combined appeal on Trafalgar Day. The idea was that two-thirds of the proceeds should go to the society's various branches for the extension of their work among the mercantile marine. Mr Treleaven explained that the suggestion emanated from the Dunediu Branch, ami it was proposed to make it a Dominion effort if possible. Professor Blunt moved that the league co-operate with the society in the direction suggested. After some discussion, it was decided to invite representatives of the society to attend a conference with the league to discuss the merits of combined and independent appeals.
