MEATLESS DAY IN HOTELS. LONDON POTATO PATCHES. "The Times" Service. LONDON, March 3. Although a meatless day has not been ordered, several West End restaurants arc following the example of Hie clubs, and are refusing to serve meat on Fridays. Many thousand people arc working on potato patches, and sonic London firms now close on Saturday mornings in order to enable week-end potato patch digging to be carried on. The newspapers are printing instructions for vegetable growing, and the Ministry regards this as valuable assistance. The Poor Law Guardians have been instructed to revise the workhouse, dietaries, varying Hour, meat, and sugar with substitutes. The maximum price regulations have produced a crop of prosecutions, and the magistrates arc taking a serious view of offences. The cable news in this Issue accredited to "The Times" has appeared in that journal, but only where expressly stated is such news the editorial opinion of "The Times."
