A SCHOOL FAIR.

TO RAISE PRIZE FUNDS. A most successful fair and jumble sale was held on Saturday afternoon at the East Christehurch School. There was a largo attendance of parents and children, and the various stalls, flowersellers, rallies, and entertainments were well patronised. Special mention may be made of the jumble sale, which was held in one of the class-rooms, and where, for a small sum, millinery, hardware, go-carts, old and new clothes, bird-cages, boots and shoes, and a thousand and one articles of a varied nature, were eagerly bought up. The object of the fair was to raise funds for the progress and attendance prizes which the School Committee presents each .year. It is hoped by this effort, that a sum of £SO will be netted, and this will be held as a reserve fund, in order uot to interfere with the general funds of the committee. There are four schools under the control of the East Christchurch School Committee, viz., East Christehurch Main, Main Infant, Phillipstowu, and South Belt, comprising in all over 1500 scholars. Stall-holders were as follow:-—Boots and books, Mrs Sapsford; miscellaneous, Mrs Penlington; hardware, Mrs Allan!; men's clothing, Mrs Drayton; ladies' millinery, Mrs H. W. Piper; ice-cream, Miss Webster and Miss Clough; sweets, infant school teachers, under Miss Men/.ies; produce, Phillipstown school teachers, in charge of Miss Robinson; bran-tub, Standard VI. girls, in charge of Doris Heard; concert hall, Miss Menzics; refreshments, Gloucester Street. and South Belt Schools, in charge of the Misses Chaplin and Gilniour. There was also an interesting exhibition of children's work presided over by Mr Kennedy. This comprised specimens of hand-writing, painting, map-drawing, and paper-work. The decorations throughout were in yellow and white. Those responsible for a great deal of organisation were:-»Mi" A. F. Drayton (chairman) and Mr II W. Piper (secretary). Messrs John Jamieson, W.Gnnnmitt, and A. Allard officiated at the gate and on the door.
