APPEAL TO PATRIOTISM OF FARMERS.
SHOULD SACRIFICE THEIR WAR PROFITS. PROBLEMS OF BRITISH WHEAT SUPPLY. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association, (Received February 10, 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, February 11. Mr R. E. Prothero (President of the Board of Agriculture), speaking at Preston, said that cereals and potatoes should be raised in the biggest possible quantities. Regarding wheat at 60/- per quarter, Mr Prothero said that had he a free hand lie would tell the farmers that they would receive a maximum of 50/-, leaving the remainder to the play of the market. "I want to get the whole Empire in key to,,tbat proposal," said Mr Prothero. "The farmer of Great Britain should sacrifice some of his prospects of war profits. India* has sacrificed her profits to feed us, and Australia has done the same. "We hoped in 1916 that Canada would do likewise, but we were too late, as usual, because the farmer was beginning to get high profits at Chicago. A Canadian farmer said to me, 'How can you ask us to take less for your sakes in England when the farmers in England are taking every penny of war profits? 7 "We should be able to say, 'Our farmers cheerfully accepted the sacrifice of possible profits; go you and do the same.' Let us all be in it, and out to win the war."
