NEWS AND NOTES. From Our Own Correspondent. The Tinwald, Town Board met on Friday evening, Mr T. Williams presiding. The Inspector of Traffic reported that several persons were being proceeded against for breaefies of the by-laws. The credit balance at the Bank was £ll7 10/; i, and accounts totalling £7 16/were passed for payment. On Sunday the Bth .Regimental Band were motored to the "mouth" on a combined ''business and pleasure" trip. The day was beautifully fine and a large number of bandsmen, with their wives and families, journeyed to Hakatere. Suitable selections were rendered by the band and were greatly appreciated by the residents. Before leaving for home Mr S. Dennis (bandmaster) thanked the residents for their hospitality and also those who had lent cars. The Medical Board continued its sitting on Saturday morning and 83 men were examined. The percentage of passes was good and in addition to balloted men 19 volunteers were examined, 11 of
whom passed as fit for active service. The reminder wore suitable for home service. The following are the classes in which the men are graded:— A Glass.—Men fit for active service beyond the seas. Bl.—Men fit after operation in camp or public hospital. B2. —Men fit after recovery at home. Cl.—Those who might be made fit for active service after further training. C2.—Others. D Class.—Men permanently unfit for any service in connection with the war. The results in'each class were:—(Mass A 48, Bl 4, B2 1, CI 2, C2 27, D 1. Mr G. R. Tilson, Greylands, Hinds, has been notified that his brother, Private L. (>. Tilson, has beeu admitted to the ;>2ud Stationary Hospital, Wimoreux, suffering from a tuberculous lung. At the Magistrate's Court on Saturday, before Mr W. W. White, a statutory first offender was fined 10/- for drunkenness. The Military Service Appeal Board will next sit in Ashburton on Tuesday, February (!. There was a good attendance at the weekly stock and produce sales on Saturday and the following prices were realised:— Poultry.—Roosters ,'!/-, chickens lOd to 1/2 per pair. Pigs.— Baeoners, porkers 50/-, weaners IK/- to 23/6. Cattle.—Jersey heifer in full profit £7 10/-, calves 5/0. Produce. —Tomatoes Id to 5d per lb., onions (id per string, potatoes 2Jd per lb. Fruit.—Plums 2(1 to 2Jd per lb, peaches 2Jd to :U per lb, apricots 2id to iild per lb, apples Id to 2d per lb.
