So Hellas Is grown old! Vainly wo dreamed, That counted her for Freedom and acclaimed Hi>r one- puissant valour; wo air sha mod That so have loved her we have almost deemed Hellas a name for Honour and esteemed Nothing more lovely than the land, which flamed Through the old world ideals that we have named "Greatest and noblest"—vainly we have dreamed. Hellas is dead! That Hellas which defied The haughty Asian, and in later years Hose up against the Turk, and fought, and Lied, Till Europe, watching, with swift wonder cried, And brought her aid and freedom--now her fears Have made men cry In scorn, "Hellas is dead." —Edgar Stanley, in an Exchange.
