Smith stales that a fortnight prior to his death. Admiral Dewey told him that von Diedrichs, the German admiral at Manila, during the Spanish-American war, planned to take possession of the Phillippines in the name of Germany, who had agreed to purchase them from Spain, the objective being a great German possession in the Far Last.
