SUMNER-REDCLIFFS.

A meeting was called for Friday evening to consider the holding of a Gala in Sumner, in aid of the local war funds. Owing to the Mayor and .several of the councillors being engaged at another meeting, it was decided to adjourn until this evening at 8 o'clock, when it is hoped there will be a large attendance.

The monthly meeting of the Sumner Burgesses' Association was held on Saturday evening, the president (Mr Buttle, senr.) being iu the'chair. Several members were elected, bringing the membership up to 4'.5. Mention was made of the very satisfactory increase in the population disclosed by the latest census returns. The high price charged for the use of the slot telephone was commented upon, and it was decided to again approach the department, and eudeavour to get a reduction. The matter of providing amusements on the beach for children was discussed at length. Suggestions were also made for restricting bathing and paddling at ebb-tide between the Cave Rock and the tram bridge, so as to minimise the danger of accidents at that spot. The proposed Gala was discussed, and it was decided torask the Mayor to preside at a public meeting to be called for that purpose this week.
