There was a serious earthquake at the Island of Bale Java (Litlie Java). Fifty natives were killed, 200 injured, and thousands of houses, factories, and temples destroyed, while the Governor's palace was damaged. Isalc Java is an island east of Java, 70 miles by 35 in area. A cable message from Sydney published on Tuesday last stated:—The seismograph at Rivervicw College at 10.45 yesterday morning recorded an earthquake of high intensity 2800 miles from Sydney—probably in the Pacific, north-oast of Samoa.
