A German official message states:—The Austro-Germans, in mountain lighting between the eastern frontiers of Transylvania and the lowlands of the Sereth gained important territory and several hundred prisoners. The Germans stormed and captured Obiditzi and Rotesti. in the region of Rimnicu Sarat. The Austro-Germans pierced the Russian bridgehead at Braila, and captured Gurgeuli and Romuaul, after violent house-to-house fighting, taking 1400 prisoners.
AUSTRIA-HUNGARY LONGING FOR PEACE.
FREEDOM WANTED FROM GERMAN YOKE INTERNAL DISSENSION GROWING STRONGER. United Service. (Received January 6, 12.25 p.m.) LONDON, January 5. 'J'he ■"Westminster Gazette" says it is becoming evident that Austria and Hungary sincerely desire the end of the Avar and to free themselves from the German yoke. The food shortage is pressing with extreme severity on Austria-Hungary, compelling the Magyars to side against the Austro-Germans. Hungary resolutely refuses to export grain to Austria, although Austria declares herself to be starving. Austria threatens to refuse the renewal of the Ausgleieh economic agreement, on which the Dual Monarchy rests. The sudden departure of the Kaiser from Vienna on the eve of the Emperor's funeral is now believed to have been most significant.
THE ALLIES' NOTE TO GREECE.
A PORTION WILL BE REJECTED. GOVERNMENT WILL SUBMIT TO CONSEQUENCES. Jieuter's Telegrams. (Received January 6, 12.25 p.m.) ATHENS, January 5. The ex-Premiers Avho were consulted by King Constantino unanimously decided that the Entente Note was unacceptable, inasmuch as acceptance would be equivalent to a recognition that Greece contemplated attacking General Sarrail's rear. It is stated that the Government and King Oonstantine have decided to reject certain clauses of the Note and passively submit to the consequences.
RESERVISTS BLOW UP RAILWAY BRIDGES.
PREVENTING THE TRANSPORT OF TROOPS. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received January 6, 1.50 p.m.) LONDON, January 5. The "Daily Telegraph's" Piranis correspondent states that the reservists have blown up the railway bridges in- South Larissa to prevent the transport of troops to Peloponnesus. Only 7030 guns had been moved before the New Year. The American Consul has presented a Note recounting the arrest and ill-treatment of an American citizen named Saffis, aid demanding an inquiry.
RESIGNATION OF HOLLWEG DEMANDED.
DISCREDITED IN GERMANY AND EUROPE. EVACUATION IN THE WEST URGED, lieuter's Telegrams. (Received January 6. 12.25 p.m.) AMSTERDAM, January 5. Krupp's organ, the "Neueste Naehriehten" demands the immediate resignation of l)r von Bethmann Hollweg. Tt says that after the Entente's rejection of his peace proposals he is discredited not only in Germany as a weakling, but throughout Europe. The " Arbciter Zeitnng" urges instant evacuation in the West if the. Entente is willing to negotiate for peace afterwards.
ALLUSION TO A SCRAP OF PAPER.

The " Neueste Naohrichtcn'" bitterly assails l)r von Bcthmann Hollweg's reference to scraps of paper at the outbreak of the war, and the Entente's use thereof in the recent reply. It is significant that the "Deutsche Zeitung" simultaneously declares that these three words arc as bad as .10 lost, battles. It also demands that I)r von Bcthmann llolhveg should tresign. Some newspapers demand the return of Admiral von Tirpitz.

Lloyd's report that the Brilish steamer Oronsay (4701 Ions) has been sunk. The losses of Allied and neutral ships to .January 5 total 2,968.000 tons. CHRISTIANIA, January 5. The total Norwegian shipping losses in 1916 were 58.000 tons. Nevertheless the Customs receipts are a record.

In tin- Senate debate Mr Lewis, a close friend of President Wilson, declared that the President's peace Note was intended to be taken as an indication that the I'nited States would be unable to keep out of the war much longer.
