THE NAVY'S THANKS.

LETTERS TO NAVY LEAGUE. The two following letters have been received by the president of the Canterbury branch of the Navy League from Admirals Beresford and Jellicoe, thanking the branch for its assistance in connection with the Navv League War Fund:— Sir, —The general secretary of the Navy League has told me of the fine response to the appeal made, at the instance of the branches of the Navy League in New Zealand, South Australia, and South Africa, on behalf of the Navy League Overseas Relief Fund, raised for the purpose of affording supplementary relief for the dependents of officers and men who have lost their lives in action, or in circumstances equivalent to action, at sea during the war. The very kind thoughts which prompted these most liberal subscriptions are deeply appreciated by the officers and men of the Fleet, and in asking you to convey, if opportunity offers, our grateful thanks to the donors, I would beg you to assure them that we look iipon their generosity towards this fund •is an eloquent testimony to the unitv of the Empire. (Signed) J. JELLICOPI Sir, —On the part of my committee, I wish to express our warmest thanks aud appreciation of your great generosity and patriotic assistance in helping us by such a handsome donation to benefit the families of those men who have been lost in the Royal Navy and Mercantile Marine during the war, and to those who have been incapacitated. The subscription of £2."),000 is simply magnificent, more particularly considering that the claims of your people have been very considerable of late, and also that the taxation is very heavy throughout the Empire. You may rest assured that we shall make grants as fairly as possible, ami without any favouritism whatever, and that the large subscriptions sent us will be divided fairly. (Signed) BERESFORD, Admiral.
