Morrison (killed in action in France on October 211 was for a number ; of years an active member of tbe F. Battery, : Christchurcli. He left to join the tith ConItingent to South Africa, was wounded in ; the Boer war, and was one of the Canterbury men chosen for King F.dward's Coronation Contingent to England. Some years alter his return to Christchurcli he joined his elder brother in dairy farming at Mauugatapere, Whanpnrei, where he left to join the Auckland Mounted Rifles, leaving with the Main Body, served and was wounded at Gallipoli, and after his recovery transferred to the artillery, with which he served in France until his death. 1 Private John William Herbert Bryan*, who died at Beading Hospital on November 2., was a son of Mr G. H. Bryant, Geraldine. He left New Zealand with the Canterbury Infantry, in the lith Reinforcement. In the big advance on September 2IJ in France he was severely wounded, and was sent to Heading Hospital, where he contracted tvphoid, which resulted In his death. Mrs B. Uonn, 22 S lerbome Street, has re reived the following letter from Lieutenant Colonel H. Stewart, Commanding O'ticer. 2nd Battalion of Canterbury Infantry, dated ! October 8, 1910:—"Dear Mrs Donn,—l wish to express to you my very sincere sympathy in the loss of your son, Lieut. .1. Donn. He was killed instantaneously by rifle (Ire on the afternoon of October 1, during the capture of some German trenches near the village of Flcrs. He died without any pain, and we buried him and put a cross over his grave. Your son had already proved l himself a first-rate officer, as he had al-! ways been a most reliable and efficient j non-commissioned officer. His loss will be j sever iy felt by his company and the battaliou, and particularly by tho-.e of us who had now for over two years been with him on active service. I trust that in your sorrow you will find some con-: solation in the thought of his gallant re-: cord, and that he died a brave death on the battlefield. With deepest sympathy,: believe me. yours sincerely.—H. Stewart."
