LYTTELTON HARBOUR.
MEETING OF THE BOARD. The monthh meeting of the board, held to-day, was attended bv Messrs M. J. Miller (chairman). F. Horrell, Hugo Friedlander, J. J. Graham, GeoScott, ('.has. Allison, J. Storrv. the Hon. R. Moore, T. I). Boag, A. Have J. J. Dougall. H. F. Nicoll. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT. The chauman reported that £4308 10/11 had been paid into the Harbour Fund account during the month. The ordinary cash receipts for the eleven months ended November 3Q| 1910, amounted to £57,172 4 10, as compared with £59,351 4/- during the corresponding period of last year. Trie bank hook showed the Harbour Fund to be in credit £1904 0/8. During the month of November 183 vessels, comprising 9 oversea and 174 coastal and intercolonial vessels, entered the Port of Lyttelton with a total tonnage of 130,535 tons, as compared with 198 vessels aggregating 137,831 tons during the corresponding period of last year. The report was adopted. ENGINEER'S REPORT. The board's engineer (Mr Cyrus J. R. Williams) reported that the : freezing machinery was now satisfactorily running on the Lake Coleridge current. The wharf lights were running satisfactorily and extension of the lighting in'the form of small lights on the jetties and in the various stores and to the Sailors' Home, were in progress. The saving in coal in the cool stores and electric lighting was at the rate of £SOO per year. The report was adopted. HARBOUR IMPROVEMENT. The Harbour Improvement Committee reported that the question of installing flashing lights in leading beacons had been deferred for the present, pending receipt of quotations from England. The committee recommended that the Union Steam Ship Company be informed that the board had decided to take no action at present with regard to keeping strangers off the wharf on departure and arrival of ferry steamers. The application for increased wages from the firemen on the dredge Canterbury will be considered when the whole of the staff salaries are being reviewed. With regard to additional lighting on the wharves, the committee recommended the adoption of the engineer's report, in which he proposes to install small power lamps at a lower level on each of the present J nip-posts, and that the present practice of making a charge for additional high power lights burned at the request of agents of vessels working cargo at night be continued. the report was adopted. FINANCE. The Finance Committee recommended that the matter of keeping J, , board ' s vessels classified in Lloyds Register be referred to the Harbour Improvement Committee for consideration.—This was approved. Accounts amounting to £4750 were passed for payment. CORRESPONDENCE. The Harbours Association wrote to say that the Hon. W. D. S. Mac Donald had assured the executive that Harbour Boards would not be affected, as regards dues and charges, by the purchase of the wool clip bv the Government. The Shipwreck Relief Society asked for a donation to its funds It was decided to await further information and to postpone consideration of the request until next meeting. St. John Ambulance Association also asked for a donation in aid of the Canterbury Centre. A grant of t'lo was made. The Senior Naval Otlicer of the New Zealand Division advised that the necessary action was being taken in connection with the board's claim to a fender damaged bv s.s. Waipori. The secretary reported that, at last the board had managed to get the money. The harbourmaster reported that he had ordered the removal of the Annie Hill, Mullough, Canterbury, and Wairau, which have been Ivirig at No 8 low level breastwork and the Gladstone breastwork. The action was approved. SIR ERNEST SHACKLETONS VISIT. Mr A. Have said thai the board should do something to recognise Sir Ernest Shacklcton's work, on the occasion of his passing throush Christchurch. He suggested that something in the nature of a luncheon might be arranged. Mr Allison considered thai am recognition made should be a general one. He moved that the board art in conjunction with the Technical College, Canterbury College, and other institutions in the matter. It was eventually decided thai the chairman, and Messrs Kave and Cyrus Williams be appointed a s'.ibcommiltee to make arrangements i l I the direction indicated.
