The Pateena, which was brought into commission again at Wellington on Monday is In charge of Captain B. B. Irwin, who has with him the following officers-.—Chief, Mr W. A. Gray; second, Mr A. E. Young; third, Mr E. Jackson; purser, Mr R. V. Dickey; chief engineer, Mr P. J. Hickcy; radio operator, Mr H. Speed. The Aralucn, from Montreal, via ports, arrived at I.yttelton this morning. Mr P. C. Williams, third officer of lhc Ngatoro, has come ashore. The Manuka, which was to have arrived at I.yttelton to-day, has been delayed in Wellington by the shortage of labour ami will not leave the northern port until G p.m. to-day. Whilst many Victorians are now regarding with interest the City of Sydney, on account of her being transformed from a mail steamer to a lumber-carrying auxiliary six-masted schooner, old identities around the waterfront, especially at Sydney Mid Newcastle, will learn of the transformation from sail to steam of a once Well-known favourite in Australia. The vessel that has undergone the latest transformation Is the old barque Ben Cruachan, Which Barclay, Curie, and Co. turned out from their Glasgow yards as far back as "73," and which earned, In the "good old days," a very enviable reputation, even amongst the crack ships of the day. Some little time since she changed owners, becoming the property of Mr E. ,1. Bayer, or Mobile, who ordered her to shipbuilder's yards, from where she was turned out recently a auxiliary screw three-masted steamer, bearing the name Carmela. The Ben Cruachan is not the first vessel to be so transformed, certainly, but her long association with the Australian trade makes her change particularly interesting. It does not fall to the lot of every seafaring man to be an officer on board a torpedoed vessel, but such an experience befell Mr J. Gibb, chief olTleer of the City of Delhi, which arrived at Wellington on Sunday (says the "New Zealand Times") from New York. The vessel, on which Mr Gibb held a similar position, was the City of Lucknow, ■which was torpedoed by a German submarine in the Mediterranean Sea on April 30. The attack was made without any warning, and only nine minutes expired before the vessel disappeared. No lives were lost, but the submarine kept the lifeboats in view for five hours, until the exhausted men were rescued by a passing vessel, when the submarine made oil". Two other officers at present on the City of Delhi, Mr Leighton, second officer, and Mr Cunninghame, chief steward, were also on the torpedoed vessel at the time of the disaster.

Mr R. S. Taylor has joined the Maori as radio operator. The Tarawera arrived I'roni the south this morning, she leaves lor Auckland this afternoon. Despite the varied opinions held by marine writers on the matter of a likely drop in the values of shipping tonnage, several sales reported by the mail indicate that the market remains firm and on a high plane, especially for moderate-sized cargocarriers (says the Sydney "Shipping List"). The disposal of the steamer Hacluiess adequately illustrates that for when built bv Messrs \V. Cray and Co. in 1911, she cost the London and Northern S.S. Co.. Ltd., about £8 I/- per ton, but when she changed owners a few weeks ago, the price paid bv the Canadian Pacific Hallway Co. for her works out at £2(l !)/-.

Till: CITY OF SYDNEY AT MELBOURNE. The big American six-masted schooner City of Sydney, which left San Francisco on August 30, Is now In port at Melbourne (says a recent "Sydney Shipping List'*). She is to the agency of Messrs A. V. Maniachi and Co., and is laden with 97!),252 feet of lumber, also a quantity of gasolene and lubricating oils. The City of Sydney, it will be recalled, was withdrawn from active service as a steamer six years ago, and sold to a breaking-up (bin for £.'looo. Not anticipating the present demand for tonnage, the steamer was stripped of fittings at once, and later on the machinery was removed, so when. Captain L. A. Pcderson, who, by the way, also owns the steamer Costa Hica, pin-chased her last January for £IOOO, she was little better than a hulk. The captain, however, lost no time in setting to work, and had the vessel sent to the yards of Moore and Scott at Oakland, where new decks were laid, new masts and rigging and accessories, new cabins, required were provided, so when she begain loading as a six-masted schooner about £25,000 had been spent on her. Apart altogether from the conversion from a steamer, the City of Sydney had bad an eventful career. She was built at New York in 1875, and at the time ranked as an ocean greyhound. When America went to war with Spain she was used as a transport, carrying troops to the Philippines. The war over, a place was found for her in the San Francisco-Fastcrn service, and later on she was transfered to the Panama trade, and continued In that until experts deemed her to be too old. Captain A. H. Anderson has command of the City of Sjdney, which carries a crew of 10 men.
