COMPENSATION CASE.

AN ASHBURTON ACTION. CLAIM AGAINST COUNCIL. [Special to The Sun.] ASHBURTON, December 5. Mr Justice Denniston presided over a sitting of the Compensation Court at Ashburton, to-day, to hear a claim brought by George Spencer, farmer, of Carew, against the Ashburton County Council for £330, compensation for land taken and severance consequent on the council's having constructed a waterrace through complainant's property. The assessors were James Cow (for claimant) and Thos. Blaekley (for defendant). Mr F. J. Rolleston appeared for plaintiff and Mr Purnell for respondent. Plaintiff claimed £l3O, for the loss of the use of 10 acres of land, and £2OO for damage caused by severance and the nature of the works, and value of 400 acres allegedly having been reduced by 10/- an acre. Mr Rolleston, in opening, said that the claim had been set on as low a basis as possible, and every allowance had been made for the council (Proceeding.)
