SALE OF PICTURES. A BILL INTRODUCED. By Cable. — Press Association. — Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association (Received November 27, 10.50 a.m.) LONDON, November 26. A Bill is before Parliament to enable the trustees of the National Gallery to sell superabundant works in order to obtain funds to purchase masterpieces when they are offered. The Government grants lo public galleries are likely to be restricted for many years, owing to the war. The National Gallery possesses many examples of the best artists of the Dutch schools, and there are good opportunities to dispose of superfluous works, as America i collectors are paying high prices. The opponents of the Bill declare that private collectors will not bequeath pictures to the nation if the trustees are empowered to sell them.
