LINCOLN COLLEGE FETE.

SPOILED BY BAD WEATHER. The Canterbury Agricultural College on Saturday afternoon held a patriotic fete, which was intended to swell the funds of the Red Cross Society. Everything promised well, and the students were confident that their enterprise would be rewarded by a substantial sum. Shortly before the commencement of the sports, rain began to fall, and it increased to a steady downpour, which completely spoilt the whole affair. The attendance was large, and included many friends of the students, who motored from Christchurch. Colonel the Hon. R. Heaton Rhodes opened the gathering. He referred to the urgent need for material for carrying on the Red Cross work in France, Britain' and Egypt, and at the front He spoke of the generous way in which money, etc., had been subscribed from the Canterbury military district, which included Marlborough, Nelson, and the West Coast. Well over £IOO,OOO had been sent or was being sent from these districts. He went on to speak of the British Government's splendid work for the Red Cross, and of the large number of hospitals and convalescent homes established in the Mediterranean. He also gave details of the good work carried out in Egypt and Malta. During the afternoon a band of boys from the Burnham Industrial School played a programme of music. A'number of stalls were open in the grounds for the disposal of produce, etc.. for the funds, the tea tent being in the charge of Mrs E. Scott; ice cream, Miss L. Maefarlane; flowers and sweets, Mrs F. Hilgemlorf; produce stall, Mrs R. E. Alexander; works stall, Mrs J. G. Seott. At the conclusion of the afternoou a quantity of produce and other gifts was disposed of by auction for the fund. The wet weather effectually put a stop to all the competitions.
