TRADES AND LABOUR.
CARPENTERS' UNION. A conference of delegates representing the whole of the branches in New Zealand of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners will take place in Christehurch next week. The conference is called for the purpose of dealing with two distinct issues, viz., the drafting of a new set of conditions for the proposed Dominion award, and also for revising' the constitution to comply with present-day conditions in New Zealand. Mr John Dias (who has just returned from England after attending as general councillor for Australasia, the Triennial General Council of the held in Manchester in July and August) and Mr F. A. Moody, senior member of the Advisory Council for New Zealand, have been given full power to deal with the requirements of the New Zealand members as regards local autonomy. Two delegates from the Canterbury Carpenters' Union have been invited to attend the award conference, and the union has accepted the offer. The proceedings will commence on Monday next at the executive board's office, 574 Colombo Street, and Mr Ivor llazell, executive secretary, will be in attendance.
