RHODES SCHOLARS.
THE SELECTION MADE. PONDER AND MELDRUM. Press Association. WELLINGTON, November 8. The New Zealand Rhodes Scholars for 1017 were selected to-day, the successful candidates being:— Arthur Osborne Ponder, 8.A., (Canterbury College). Alexander Francis Meldrum (Victoria College, Wellington). Both are now serving with the Expeditionary Forces. A. 0. Ponder, of Canterbury College, is a son of Mr R. A. Ponder, of Rugby Street, Merivale. He was born in Christchurch in 1894, and, after a promising primary school, career,
gained, in 1905, a junior board scholarship. In the following year he went to the Boys' High School, and in 1908 gained a senior board scholarship. In 1910 he sat for a university scholarship and was placed on the credit list and was the winner of a Gammack scholarship. He refused this, continuing his studies at the High School until the end of 1911, when he gained a junior scholarship. In this examination he was placed second on the list for New Zealand, obtaining special mention in mathematics and chemistry. At the end of 1911 he was dux of the Boys' High School. His university career began in 1912. The following year he gained an exhibition in chemistry. Passing his third year college examinations in 1914, he won an exhibition in chemistry and also the Haydon prize in chemistry. His B.A. degree was gained the same year, and in it he won a senior university scholarship in chemistry. He was studying for his M.A. degree, and was engaged in research work in chemistry when he enlisted with the 3rd Battalion of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade. He is now serving in France.
