Mr A. E. G. Rhodes left last evening for Wellington. Mr J. Loudon, of Dunedin, arrived from the north this morning. Judge Gilfedder arrived in Christehureh yesterday from Wellington . Mr S. J. Collett, Government Tourist Agent, left yesterday on a visit of inspection to Peel Forest. Messrs R. Gilmer (Wellington) and E. R. Boucher (Auckland) are among the guests at the Clarendon. Mr L. M. Tsitt, M.P., left last evening for Wellington, and will return to Christchureh to-morrow or Friday.
Mr G. L. Peterson, the advance agent for Wirth's Circus, arrived at the Bluff from Melbourne on Monday. Mr E. IT. Just, headmaster of the Lyttelton Borough School, arrived from Wellington by the Mararoa this morning.
Br Truby King, of the Seaeliff Mental Hospital, passed through Christchurch yesterday, on his way to Wellington. The. lion. D. Buddo, M.P., has again been nominated to a seat on the Board of Governors of Canterbury Agricultural College. Captain Raiviey, marine superintendent of the Commonwealth and Dominion Line at Wellington, arrived by this morning's ferry boat. Mr E. J. Righton, managing director of the New Zealand Picture Supplies, Ltd., passed through Christchureh yesterday, on his way south. The Hon. G. W. Russell, Minister of Internal Affairs, will arrive in Christchurch this evening from Dunedin, and will go on to Wellington. The Hon. W. IT. Hemes, Minister of Railways, passed through Christchureh last evening, on his return to Wellington, after spending a month in Otago. Visitors to Warner's Hotel include Messrs G. Gibson (Dunedin), 11. C. Cambridge (Wellington), T. V. Ellis (Dunedin), and E. M. Silk (Wanganui). Messrs A. L. Hudson (Timaru), W. G. Kinuerncy (Timaru), W. .1. Coath (Wellington), and A. Lucas are staying at the United Service Hotel. Advice was received by cable yesterday in Ashliuvton that Lieut.-Colonel John Findlay is now back in Egypt, after spending a month's furlough in England. Mr Eric Lyon, of the legal firm of Messrs Franks, Hunter, and Lyon, has enlisted for active service, and will go into camp in January with the 25th Reinforcement. The international Bible Students' Association has suffered a loss in the death of it:i president and founder, Pastor Charles Ta/.e Russell, who succumbed to an attack of heart failure while travelling to New York after an extended tour including Texas and the Pacific Coast. He was pastor of the Brooklyn Tabernacle as well as of the London Tabernacle, editor of "The Watch Tower," and author of a series of six volumes of "Studies in the Scriptures," which have had a wonderful circulation, reaching about 10,000,000 of copies.
Mr T. S. J. Doherty, of Meihven, left, for Wellington last evening, wdiere he will represent the Methven Agricultural and Pastoral Association at the Woolgrowers ' Conference. Mr IT. Michel, of Hokitika, who is at. present staying in Christchurch, will leave this evening for Wellington, en route to Australia, where he intends to spend a few weeks. Major Barclay, medical superintendent at the Wellington Hospital, who joined the staff of the hospital ship Maheno early in January, is returning by that vessel, which is due about the middle of next month. According to private advice received recently in Dunedin, Corporal W. H. Frame, of the Main Australian Force, has been awarded the Military Medal. Corporal Frame served five months on Callipoli, and was then invalided to England. Since his recovery he has been with his brigade. Ho was born at Oamaru and educated at Dunedin. At the time of his he was employed as a captain in the Melbourne Harbour Trust. The North Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board this morning acceded to a request from Dr .1. F. Duncan for leave of absence for six months, or the duration of the commission, as he had been appointed to the medical staff of the hospital ship Maheno, and had been instructed to report in camp on Decer.iber 1. Dr Duncan is medical officer for the Infectious Diseases Hospital and for the charitable aid work of the board. During his absence his duties will be undertaken by Dr Lester. Dr Francis L. Scott forwarded to the North Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, this morning, three months' notice of his resignation of the position of medical superintendent of the Christchurch Hospital, as he intends to enter into private practice. He expressed appreciation of the. kindness and courtesy he had received from the board dining his rive years of service. The resignation was accepted with regret, the chairman remarking that the board could not expect to keep Dr Scott all the time. If the board found any difficulty in filling the position, Dr Scott offered to act as a part-time officer until the position was filled. The board decided to invite applications for the position. • During the progress of the A. ami P. Show at Little River yesterday, Miss Birdling, winner of the Banks Peninsula Queen Carnival contest, was presented with an illuminated address and a dressing-ease from the residents of the Akaroa, Wairewa, Mount Herbert, Ellesmere, Springs, and Halswell Counties, and the the Boroughs of Akaroa and Lyttelton. Mr Cunningham, w r ho made the presentation, thanked Miss Birdling for the manner in which she had represented them as the Peninsula and Pillesmere Queen, and for her hearty assistance in enabling her supporters to raise nearly £25,000 in the greatest money-raising campaign in the history of the province. Mr W. Radcliffe (Mayor of Lyttelton) also spoke, and the iron. R. IT. Rhodes replied on behalf of Miss Birdling.
