AN ALTERED CERTIFICATE. MABRIED MAN'S OFFENCE. The altering of a birtli certificate in order to qualify for employment with the Railway Department was responsible for George Swansea being charged with forgery at. the Magistrate's Court to-day, before Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M. Mr Cassidy appeared for the accused. Detective R. Ward said that accused was asked to explain an apparent altering of the date on the certificate from 1881 to 1882. The accused replied that he altered the figures when applying for employment with the Railway Department. He had a wife and three children to keep and was a year too old to obtain work on the railways. William Alfred Wellings, a clerk at the head office of the Railway Department, Wellington, and Alfred John Leviek, assistant staff clerk, gave evidence.

Mr Cassidy said the acused admitted the offence. The man was hard up at the time and out of employment. He had endeavoured to enlist, but an operation was necessary before he could be accepted. The accused pleaded guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Bail was allowed in one surety of £SO.
