CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the council was held yesterday afternoon, the president (Mr H. S. Bourn) in the chair. The Minister of Justice replied to a letter re pillage of cargo, suggesting that it was a matter for consideration by the Railway Department whether the department should not appoint special railway police, similar to those appointed by the railway companies in England, to detect pilfering and trace goods stolen or removed from the railway. The letter was referred to the Importers ' Committee to collect evidence and interview the Railway Department. The General Manager of Railways replied to the letter asking that a train connecting Greymouth and Hokitika be run after the arrival of the train from Christchureh, and from Hokitika on Saturday mornings, stating that the time-table was under consideration. It was improbable that any additional trains could be arranged for. It was decided to forward a copy of the reply to the Westland Chamber of Commerce. The matter of congestion at the railway goods shed was brought up, and referred to the Importers' Sectional Committee.
