SILLY PEOPLE.
CASHING FORGED CHEQUES. MR JUSTICE SIM'S COMMENT. "This again illustrates the silly way in which people go and cash large cheques for people they have never seen before, and do not know," said his Honour Mr Justice Sim—commenting in the Supreme Court this morning on the cashing of forged cheques. "Of the four persons to whom cheques were presented," he said, "only one had the sense to hold the cheque and make inquiries. If people act in that silly way they must expect to lose their money. Hardly a case comes before the court but shows the silly way in which people cash cheques for people they do not know anything about. One who cashed these cheques was an hotelkceper, who, for a threepenny drink, cashed a cheque for £5 12/-. He did not know the man, had never seen him before, did not know the signature, and did not know the man by whom the cheque purported to be signed; yet he took this cheque and gave the man £5 11/9. All I can say is that an hotelkeeper who behaves in a silly way like that deserves to lose his money."
