RAKAIA.

Mr Walter Streej;, of Rakaia, has received word that liis son, Private Geoffrey Street, who was recently wounded in the thigh ainljias been in hospital in France, has now quite recovered and expects soon to be in the firing line once more. The ladies of St. Mark's Church are busily engaged preparing for the annual fair to help to wipe off the indebtedness on the new vicarage. For years past this function, known under various appellations, has been held on the first Thursday in December, but this year it wHI occur a fortnight later. The ladies aim at securing the patronage of the farmers on sale day, and as the Methven Races occur on the first Thursday in December a postponement has been necessary. Special tealures will be a baby show and a Christmas tree. The Girls' Friendly Society have undertaken to provide the toys and dress the dolls. As the ladies' sewing energy is being put into Red Cross work there will be no needlework stall this year. One of the largest sources of income is expected to be from luncheon and afternoon tea.

Although the General Manager of Railways has stated that it is unlikely that any scheme for the rearrangement of the Rnkaia station yard will be undertaken during the present financial stringency it is noteworthy that none of the new crossing notice boards has been erected at the main crossing in the township, although they have been erected outside the station limits. This fact seems to poiut to a contemplated change of crossing place. The present crossing, by the way, is not a public road at all.
