Among (he crowd of business, men there were many who were hostile to the sale. Before (he sale commenced the Colonial Office amended Ihc conditions of the auction so as to enable Mr Bonai- haw, the Colonial Secretary, to disapprove of any purchase, and to end the contract without any reasons being given; also enabling the Governor of the Colony to require any owner or lessee to prove that he was not a trustee for an enemy subject or company under an enemy's control. An important freehold site in the main thoroughfare of Lagos was sold for £40,500. The first day's sale realised £299,250.
