PEACE STEPS

AMERICA STANDS OFF.

WATCHING DEVELOPMENTS.

Australian and N.Z. Cable Association

WASHINGTON, October 6.

High officials deny that America has taken, or intends taking, any immediate steps in the direction of mediation in the war. They declare that the many rumours to that effect are without foundation.

Mr Lloyd George's Interviews showed clearly that such a step would be unwelcome. In the meantime developments are being watched for an indication as to when peace proposals would be welcomed.

There is some interest in the announcement that Mr Henry Ford has summoned the secretary of the Stockholm Conference to visit America, and .also in the notification that Count Bcrnstorff will pay a special visit to President Wilson on Monday.
