NEAR KOVEL.
DESPERATE RESISTANCE. GERMANS TRY TO HOLD RUSSIANS. "thf Time*" Service PKTROGRAD, October a. The Germans are endeavouring at all costs to hold the space between Hovel and Lemberg, on which mainly depend other issues of German strategy on the Russian front. II is semi-ollieially slated that Germany since September has dispatch-
Ed 12 divisions to southern sectors. With the 12 dispatched in June, altogether 24 divisions have reinforced the south-western front. Out of the 12 which arrived in September nine divisions are now defending the Kovel approaches, where Marshal von llindenburg in the middle of September had concentrated ill divisions.
Russian critics predict that there will be an obstinate resistance at Kovel, and express the opinion that there will be a most formidable concentration at this point, by which can be gauged the importance the enemy command attaches to the Vladimir-Kolynski region.
