PRICE OF BUTTER.

The proposed increase in the price of butter was discussed al a meeting of the Wellington Trades Council this evening, and a strong protest was made against any rise in the retail cost of this New Zealand product. The council decided to draw the attention of the Government to a promise given by Mr Massey in till,") that if the price of butter rose above 1/7 per lb retail, the export would be prohibited. No announcement has been made of the intentions of the Government with regard to the proposed increase in the price of butter. The Hoard of j Trade has considered the matter, and! has made a recommendation which! is understood to be against the in-; crease of 2d per lb being allowed.; The members of the board arc of: opinion that the local price should; be kept down to its present level by, the use of the power possessed by I
the Government to prohibit export. This may involve some adjustment! among the exporters, in order that the loss represented by the difference between the export price f.o.b. and the local wholesale price may be distributed fairly among the producing factories. The matter will be! considered by Cabinet.
