SOME PERSONAL NOTES.

Advice has been received by Mr S. 11. Richards, of the Crown Clothing Company, Christchurch, that his son, Lieutenant Henry Stokes Richards, of the 12th Battalion of the Essex Regiment, has been wounded and invalided to England. Lieut. Richards is New Zealand's Rhodes Scholar for 1915. He was educated at the Rangiora High School, where be gained a Junior University Scholarship that took him to Canterbury College. There he gained a Senior University Scholarship in Mathematics. He graduated Master of Arts, and was selected as the Rhodes Scholar. Leaving Christchurch for England on July 13 of last year, he passed the entrance examination Th Greek, at Oxford, formally took up his residence at Oxford, to comply with the Rhodes Scholarship conditions, and immediately enlisted. He went to the front on July 12. lieutenant Richards first enlisted in Christchurch on the outbreak of war and was in camp for several weeks, but he was withdrawn from camp for the sake of his candidature for the Rhodes Scholarship. He is a keen Rugby footballer and represented Canterbury College on the amateur running track. He is 22 years of age. Lieutenant A. J. Rirdling (killed in action) was the eldest son of Mr Arthur Rirdling, of Halswell, and was 25 years of age. He was educated at the Halswell School and the Christchurch Boys' High School. At the latter he played in the llrst Rugby fifteen. After leaving school he took up farming. He had a commission in the C.Y.C. Lieut. Rirdling left New Zealand with the Mounted Rifles of the fitli Reinforcement. A brother, Gerald Rirdling, was wounded some time ago. Sergeant Ernest Joseph O'Ronohue, killed in action) was a son of Mr Martin o'Donohue, of Papanui, and a brother of Sister M. St. Angeliqiie, of the Nelson Convent. He enlisted in the Rifle Brigade. Sergeant O'Donohue leaves a wife and three children. Two brothers are in camp at present. Rifleman John Eric Erickson Warnock (killed in action) was the elder nephew of Miss S. M. Warnock, schoolmistress at Killinchy, by whom he was adopted, in infancy, with his younger brother. He was 21 years of age. He was educated at the Killinehy School and the Waitnki Roys' High School, and afterwards took up fanning. His brother. Sergeant J. Warnock, was formerly in the Valuation Department and is now in the records office at the Fcathcrston Camp. Private Albert YV. Evans (killed in action) was the nnlv son of Mr and Mrs \V. Evans, of 9 Suffolk Street. Linwood, and was 1S years old. He was educated at the East Christchurch School, and afterwards was employed at Mr Sutherland's cooperage. His fattier was a member of Il>e Main Expeditionary Force, and relumed in time to see bis son leave with tin- 12lh Reinforcement.

Private Cecil T.. Walker (killed in action) is a brother of Professor Maxwell Walker, of Auckland University College, who is wellknown in bowline; circles in New Zealand. Private Walker was about 2S years old. Sergeant G. A. Hamilton (wounded) i< a son of Mr 11. Hamilton, of Southbrook, and is 2f> vears of age. He was educated at the Southbrook School. He was employed by the New Zealand Farmers' Co-opera-tive Association at Bnngiora. F.ulisling in the Main Fxprditionary Force, lie saw service in (lallipoli, and was wottnded there. Soon alter arriving in France he was one of fill men selected to represent New /(aland at a - lecial parade ill Paris. Corporal S. 11. Hobbs (wounded in the rigid foot) is a son of Mrs A. Trooper .lames ('■. Congreve (wounded) is a brother or Mr .1.1!. Congreve, of Ash burton, lie enlisted in the lilh Iteinforcement, and saw service at dallipoli hefure going to France. Ililkmnn Fdward Finer (wounded) is the youngest son of Mr Charles Finer, of Alllint, and is 22 years old. He enlisted in the Ist Battalion of the Itifle Brigade. A brother of bis is also at the front. Trooper .1. Archibald (wounded) is the eldest son of Mr and Mrs .1. Archibald. of Ifalswell, and is about 20 vears of age. He was educated at the Halswell School and afterwards took up farming. Rifleman F. Pimm (wounded) was nt one time proprietor of the Wheat Sheaf Hotel, Teddington. He also ran the coach service between Teddington, Governor's l'.av, and I.yltelton. He enlisted hi the Ist Battalion of the liille Brigade, with a younger brother, who was killed in action in* France in June. Rifleman Pimm's wife died in the Cliristchnrch Hospital last month, leaving three children.
