The anti-conscriptionists refused to face the bad weather, and the proposed "stop-work" demonstration in the Domain fizzled out. Later, a meeting was held in the Town Hall, when 5000 people unanimously demanded the withdrawal of the proclamation calling up men for military duly. AGAINST CONSCRIPTION. A BIG MEETING. MELBOURNE, October 4. Forty thousand unionists assembled on the Yarra Bank, and passed a motion against conscription. AN ABORTIVE ATTEMPT. SENATE NOT HELD UP. MELBOURNE, October 4.

The attempt to hold up the Senate until the Government further explained its military policy collapsed. Senator Mullan's amendment for a further adjournment until Tuesday was defeated by 10 votes to 8. Senator Pearce declared that the Government would take full responsibility for the proclamation and the accompanying regulations. He justified the thumb print requirement, which was applied owing to the numbers who went to the front on certificates issued to others, and were returned as unfit.
