MONTHLY MEETING.

The Lyttelton Harbour Board met at Lyttelton yesterday. Present:— Messrs M. J. Miller (chairman), C. Allison, T. D. Boag, F. Horrell, J. J. Dougall, R. M. Speirs, 11. F. Nicholl, J. J. Graham, G. Scott, H. Friedlander, J. Storry, and Hon. R. Moore. CHAIRMAN'S STATEMENT. ..The chairman reported that the following sums bad been paid into the Harbour Fund account: —Wharfage, £2208 15/7; pilotage and port charges, £1405 15/2; towage, storage, etc., £IO2B 5/10; making a total of £4702 10/7. The ordinary cash receipts for the nine months ended September 30 amounted to £48,912 1/-, as com-

pared with £50,221 2/7 during the corresponding period of last year. The Harbour Fund was in credit £1724 13/8, and, in addition, there was the sum of £1277 11/5 standing to Ihe credit of the Special Renewal Fund.

During the month of September 175 vessels, comprising five oversea and 170 coastal and intercolonial vessels, entered the port of Lvttelton, with a total tonnage of 111,251 tons, as compared with 206 vessels, aggregating 180,810 tons, during the corresponding month of last year. .Accounts amounting to £3548 8/4 were passed for payment. HARBOUR IMPROVEMENTS. The Harbour Improvement Committee recommended that consideration of the question of establishing a superannuation scheme for the board's employees be deferred until

the termination of the war. It had considered the question of repeating the order for the supply of a new 50 ton derrick crane, and recommended that the matter be held over to await further developments. The Government Astronomer had asked for the loan of Ihe board's astronomical clock, and had offered to drop the time-ball at Lvttelton at certain times by a current direct from the Hector Observatory. The committee had recommended that the board's clock should be lent to the Observatory for 12 months. The matter of theinstallation of electriccapstanson No. 0 Jetty had been held over. Messrs Lufaro and Sons, the lessees of No. 6 fish chamber at the board's cool stores, being unwilling to pay the rental of £SO a year required by the Railway Department in respect of ihe siding serving the cool store, it \/as recommended that Lufaro's ' ase be cancelled, and other ar- . angements made for storage re- ' uirements. On the suggestion of Dr i hacker the committee had adopted :i resolution recommending that the

('overnment be urged to establish a ■ irelcss station at Lyttelton Heads.' The report was adopted. BOAT SHEDS. Three tenders for the lease of the boatbuilding site and for the temporary lease, of the rowing club shed, were received; and Ihc consideration of them was held over to allow the engineer to make inquiries. SAILORS' HOME. The Sailors' Home Committee recommended that in consequence of the increased cost of supplies for the Home, Hie charge for board and lodging be increased from 17/- to 18/- per week, as from November 1, until further notice; and thai the charge for beds be increased from 1/- 16 I/O per night.
