MOTORING.
AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION. MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE. A meeting of the committee of the Canterbury Automobile Association was held last evening, Mr A. S. Clarkson presiding over a fair attendance. A vote of condolence was passed to three members of the association —Messrs Dougall, Hickmott, and Penlington—whose sons had laid down their lives in the great struggle. The financial statement, which was adopted, showed that the receipts for the month had amounted to £202 5/-, while the expenditure was £69 17/10. The town clerk wrote stating that it was necessary for every driver of a motor car in the city to have a certificate of ability, irrespective of whether he was the owner or merely the driver of a car. In reply to a request from the association regarding the compiling of a list of the registered drivers of the city, the town clerk stated that it was a formidable task, but he would endeavour to have one made out in due course. The chairman said he considered it was absurd that the town clerk should regard the matter of preparing a list such a formidable task. The work of the motor inspector was also referred to in the discussion.
Mr F. Hubbard declared he considered that the present motor inspector was doing all that could be reasonably expected of him-
The chairman said that the motor inspector's work should be on the streets, and not in the office. The clerical work should be done by a junior.
It was suggested that the City Council should appoint the various motor salesmen sub-agents for the purposes of registration, and it was
decided to make this a*recommendation to the council.
Regarding the regulation of street traffic, Mr F. M. Johnston said the traffic regulations were not obeyed. It was a quite common thing to see people standing at street corners and practically compelling the motor traffic to cross over to avoid them. He also recommended that the City Council should be asked to regulate loitering at street corners more strictly.
It was decided that the by-laws Committee of the association should meet the By-laws Committee of the City Council.
The following new members were proposed and elected:—G. Ollivier, C. W. Colville, J. L. Webb, J. Lethaby, F. Ashby, T. Aspell, C. I. Jennings, E. B Rimington, E. P. Smith, A. E. White, F. Fairweather, W. R. Sanders, G. Simpson, I). Bates, H. P. Finemore, J. B. Merrett, W. T. Oliver, S. R. Wright, C. S. Young, J. Briggs, and Mrs J. Tutton. Accounts amounting to £l4 5/were passed for payment. A set of recommendations by Mr P. R. Climie was considered, and several were well received. Some were referred to the various committees, and one was thrown out. It was decided, in response to a request, that the association should manage the Red Cross shop on December 22 and 23. In the event of the motor carnival which was held last year being repeated it was decided to give it the utmost support of the association, and to recommend that the proceeds should be devoted to the Red Cross Fund.
On the motion of Mr F. I). Kesteven it was decided, if necessary, to hold the meetings of the committee fortnightly.
