TROTTING FIXTURES. October 21 and 23—Greymouth T.C. Spring. ACCEPTANCES. October 17—G re. j mouth T.C. Spring. TURF TOPICS. It is stated that in future all hack races on the Wellington Racing Club's programmes will carry 200 sovs stake money, with 145 sovs to the winner.

Gold Soult, the winner of the Islington Handicap, met with a nasty accident while training at Porirua on Friday. He tore off one of his shoes and a nail entered full length into the frog of his foot, inflicting a rather bad wound. Precautions were at once taken against blood poisoning, and it will be necessary for the son of Gold Crest to have a spell for some days. Mr 11. Coyle has been appointed handicapper to the Waverly-Waito-tara and Horowhenua Racing Clubs. In a field of 44, handicapped by Mr Morse for the Maiden Plate at Avondale, there is only 81b between Bowler, which heads the list, and Silver Lupin, which is at the bottom. The Duuedin Jockey Club has granted George Matthews a trainer's j license. Matthews has been associa- j ted with the Ellerslie Stud for seve-1 ral years, and he will no doubt act as a private trainer to Mr J. B. Reid, who has laid out a track at Ellerslie. Matthews was at one time a wellknown rider, and later he acted as private trainer to Mr J. B. Reid when that owner had Gladsome and other horses at Canowie, Upper Riccarton.

Twelve sons of Carbine were included in the list of winning sires in Australia last season, and their descendants captured stake money to the extent of £45,929. Mr H. R. Cooper has been elected president of the Manawatu Racing Club.

The committee of the Stratford Racing Club has voted the profits for the year, amounting to £586 12/6, to the Stratford Patriotic Committee. The amount has been allocated as follows:—Belgium Relief Fund £SO; Serbian Relief Fund £SO, Red Cross Fund £25, and the balance to the Stratford Patriotic Committee's General Fund.

At the annual meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club, held on August 31, it was unanimously decided that the profits for the coming season be devoted to the Patriotic Funds.

The Taratahi-Carterton Racing Club has decided to delete the trotting events from its programme. This year the club's meeting will be on November 2, instead of on Boxing Day as formerly. Although Sir Solo did not get on the winning list at Riccarton he won nearly £l5O in place money. Sir Solo-has run four thirds since starting hurdle racing.

Both Montana and Botanist were started in the Suring Handicap at Dannevirke, but as neither horse is yet ready, they did not get a place. Montana was nearly down entering the straight, which spoilt any chance he might have had. Better things are expected of both these horses later on.

The Persian Knight—Aello colt, who was runner-up to the Puhi coll in the juvenile sprint at Ellerslie last Saturday week, can be Unproved considerably (says a northern writer). As he was always with the leading division, J. Lambess has every reason to hold out strong hopes regarding that member of his stable. During an interval between the races at Dannevirke, Mr 11. J. Jefferd, private trainer 'to the Messrs William, sported the two-year-olds Vagabond (Martian —Gipsy Girl) and Vermillion (All Red—Northern Rose) with the colours up. Evidence that trotting affairs are on the up grade in Auckland is afforded by the fact that the Auckland Trotting Club has found it necessary to provide improved office accommodation. The new offices are up to date in every respect, and include a spacious public office and a committee room.

Soultane may have been just short of the gallop he had in the Auckland Welter last Saturday week. He made a big effort inside the distance, but could only finish third. The race should improve him considerably.

Ruatangata seems fond of second places. On no fewer than eight oc-i casions he was runner-up last sea-j son, and has started this season with a second to Atualoro at Dannevirke.
