A NJS.W. COAL STRIKE. The controllers of an association in New South Wales issued an order that all coal miners must leave work for 21 hours, in scorn of the mischief that might be done to innocent people, and the order was obeyed in the unreasoning and unreasonable way in which it was issued. It is impossible to think that more than a small minority of the Wonthaggi miners were actually in favour of the stoppage. Their unionist loyalty triumphed over their intelligence and sense of fair play, and they submitted to the tyranny. As intelligent nun, they know that to aim a blow like this at the public interest is to injure themselves.—Melbourne : "Age."
